What is a GEO Agency?

A GEO agency is a digital marketing agency that works to get your business mentioned when someone asks an AI assistant a question related to what you offer.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. When a traveller asks ChatGPT which safari company to use in Tanzania, or a property investor asks Gemini which Nairobi law firm handles commercial real estate, the AI produces an answer naming specific businesses. Those businesses did not pay for placement. A GEO agency does the work that makes an AI system confident enough to name you.

What a GEO agency actually does

Entity establishment. Making sure AI systems can confidently identify who your business is. This means consistent business information everywhere it appears online, schema markup that describes your organisation clearly, a complete Google Business Profile, and a connected presence for your founder or key people.

Topical authority building. Producing content with genuine depth in the areas where you have real expertise. AI systems are good at distinguishing specific knowledge from generic marketing copy.

Structured content for extraction. Writing so that answers can be pulled out and used. Answer-first paragraphs, headings that match how people actually ask questions, and FAQ sections where each answer makes sense on its own.

Third-party citation building. AI systems learn about your business partly from what other credible sources say. This is digital PR viewed through a new lens.

Monitoring. Actually checking whether you are being cited across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, rather than assuming.

How it differs from an SEO agency

The overlap is large. Most GEO work sits on an SEO foundation, and any agency claiming GEO is an entirely separate discipline is overselling it.

The genuine difference is the goal. SEO ranks a page. GEO establishes an entity. That changes what you build and in what order.

At Nairobi Marketing we do both, for businesses across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
